About Colin Hocking

Colin Hocking Colin has a Bachelor of Science in Photographic Science with Honours from the University of Westminster in London, England, so he likes to think of himself as a "SciArtist", being able to blend the art and science of photography to create impactful images.
Colin is a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society, and belongs to the Professional Photographers of America, and the North American Nature Photography Association, and for almost two decades, has worked as a freelance photographer.
He founded the Ballantyne Photography Club which has over 850 members, and has led NANPA Field Events and meetup outings.Until he and his wife moved to Summerville, SC, Colin served on the Board of the Charlotte Camera Club, a PSA affiliate, and was an instructor with the Light Factory in Charlotte, NC, and with Nikonians, a worldwide Nikon users group. He used to run the photo department at the US National Whitewater Center, so you’ve probably seen his photos on billboards and on tv around Charlotte.
His first job out of college was with Polaroid, UK., and since then he’s worked in just about every genre of photography there is. He’s used a camera from just about every manufacturer, including medium and large format technical cameras. He’s spent way too many hours in the darkroom and owned a 1-hour photo lab in Huntington Beach, CA. When he was in college he made holograms using lasers, too.

One of his other careers was as a sales manager and trainer after which he taught software for the largest software training company in the world, and he’s a Train the Trainer Facilitator which means he used to teach trainers to train. Colin was the Department Chair at a career college in southern California for a number of years, and all this means that he can bring you an education based on sound teaching principles in a clear, concise, and understandable but fun way. In the autumn of 2019 Colin graduated as a Coastal South Carolina Master Naturalist which he did to learn about the local natural history, so that he could share that knowledge with workshop attendees and provide a more well-rounded workshop experience.

Now he trains other photographers, consults with companies, teaches, speaks at camera clubs, and leads workshops and tours in several countries. Having attended the PPAs Image Judging Workshop at the 2018 International Print Competition, Colin has also been invited to judge several photo competitions for local camera clubs, and spent much of his time as the leader of the Ballantyne Photo club giving image reviews and critiques for members so that they could improve their imagery. Over the course of his career he has trained hundreds of photographers, from beginners to professionals, and helped them improve their photography skills.

Please feel free to contact Colin if you would like him to present to, or lead a workshop/trip for your group. Image licensing inquiries are also welcome.
